The International English Language Testing System (IELTS), is an international standardised test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers. It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English.
The IELTS test is written in general or academic modules. In relation to the Plab test, the IELTS academic test is the focus here. Initially, most doctors resorted to writing the UKVI (UK visa immigration) academic module which would cover for their subsequent visa application for a TIER 2 work visa after completion of Plab tests as long as it was completed within 2 years.
Note – IELTS result expires in 2 years
But due to the recent changes by the UK government declaring all medical practitioners in the shortage occupation list, IELTS UKVI is no longer needed for the work visa application. A simple IELTS academic is enough to meet all requirements.
Benefits of the change : Reduction in financial expenses.
Cost of UKVI – £200 ( 97,000 ngn)
Cost of Academic – £162 – 180 (72 – 75,000) dependent on location
Basically, you need to write the IELTS ACADEMIC test to be eligible for the PLAB 1 test.
